Happy Go Lucky

Am I happy like Poppy in the movie ‘Happy Go Lucky’? Well, the answer would be ‘yes’ and ‘no’. I am an extremely optimistic person and like Poppy try to see the ‘silver lining in every cloud’ and the truly delightful in even the most dismal of situations.

However, along the way both Poppy and I have met some characters who challenge our optimistic view of life and some situations that cause us to embrace the reality that life sometimes is fraught with pain and suffering.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie as it showed how being an optimist can bring joy into many of life’s moments and that being childlike can also bring joy (as was evident by the students and Poppy making bird masks to enjoy in class). However, the movie also showed that, at times, no amount of optimism can overcome the sadness or pain of an experience (as was evident in the young student who was becoming a bully as a result of abuse in his home).

Although Poppy’s character (and mine) can polarize how people respond to us, I am grateful for the gift of optimism and how it has brought joy at the most surprising times into my life (even in the midst of great pain and sadness), joy which far outweighs being ‘happy’!
